Manchester at Night Photography Tour

“I wanted to write and say how much I enjoyed last night’s course in the city centre. I am downloading my photos as I type and am really pleased with some images. Good tutor; he gave us some interesting tips and techniques, and was able to help out with any problems that arose. I definitely intend to go out in the dark much more now! Thanks.”

“Just want to say a HUGE thank you for such a great time at the evening course in Manchester the other night. I learned a lot and it was great to meet other photographers. I will recommend your course to my photographer friends. I’m so glad we weren’t rained off!

I will be booking the day course and landscape course next week……”

MCR Santa by Rosie

“I just wanted to drop an email to say thanks for a great evening on 6th December. I’ve never been able to capture a good night photograph but Mike’s tips really helped and I feel that I learn lots in the space of a few hours. I’ve attached a couple of shots I got that night, I loved the China Town lights and trying to get reflections in the puddles and will definitely be trying out the shutter speed light trails again (and investing in a tripod…)

If you’re planning on running anymore courses I’d be really interested in them too, or I’m not sure if you run any type of photo club/society that I could get involved in?

Thanks again!” ~ Rosie ~

Kevin Cummins Exhibition ‘Exemplar: Joy Division’

Kevin Cummins exhibition ‘Exemplar: Joy Division’ at the Manchester Photographic Gallery

January 6th ~ February 26th 2012

www.kevincummins.co.uk

The Manchester Photographic Gallery is proud to announce that Kevin Cummins will be exhibiting a special collection of his iconic photographs of Joy Division. Kevin enjoyed unrivalled access to the band for 3 years ~ from their first gig in May 1977 to front man, Ian Curtis’ untimely death in May 1980. These stunning photographs have become synonymous with the band and their public persona, as the band’s influence has become increasingly important. This exhibition is not to be missed by any Joy Division fan.

The private viewing for Exemplar: Joy Division will be on Thursday 5th January 6-9pm (invite only ~ complimentary drinks will be served). This exhibition will be open to the public the following day, which is the date that Kevin did the – now legendary – photoshoot of Joy Division on Hulme Bridge in the snow, January 1979.

Kevin studied photography for four years in Salford. He then embarked on a career which has spanned a broad spectrum of work across the UK ~ from The National Theatre to Manchester City Football Club. Kevin has contributed to numerous UK publications, including: The Times, The Observer, The Guardian, Esquire, Maxim, Elle, Vogue, Mojo, FourFourTwo and The Big Issue. He spent 10 years as the chief photographer for the New Musical Express and was a founding contributor to The Face, the influential style magazine where he won an award for Magazine Cover of the Year. Kevin’s work can be seen gracing many record sleeves and book jackets and he regularly contributes to various publications worldwide.

Kevin will also be IN CONVERSATION - together with Joy Division Drummer Stephen Morris on Sat 7th January 2pm – 5pm. Tickets for the session are £5 each. Kevin will also be available to  sign copies of his book, ‘Joy Division‘  at Manchester Photographic Gallery. This book can be purchased at the Gallery and it is the definitive collection of Joy Division photographs, together with rare band ephemera.

Christopher Eccleston Visits Manchester Photographic

During the month of November 2011 we were very pleased to host the ‘green room’ for Red Production Company as they filmed a new four part drama for BBC one.

Christopher Eccleston meets a photograph of himself at Manchester Photographic. - Wall portrait photograph taken by Phil Melia.

Christopher Eccleston visited several times and used us as a rehearsal and green room.

We thank Christopher and the production company for using our facilities and generally being excellent guests!

Red Production Company – The Fuse

Dervla Kirwan (Injustice, The Silence) and Ewen Bremner (Page Eight, Perfect Sense) join Christopher Eccleston in this original four part drama for BBC One, written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise to Candleford, The Prisoner) and produced by Red Production Company (Exile, Single Father).

Also confirmed are Andrew Scott (The Hour, Sherlock), Lyndsey Marshal (Garrow’s Law, Being Human), Rebecca Callard (32 Brinkburn Street, Robin Hood), MyAnna Buring (The Twilight Saga, Any Human Heart) and Branka Katic (The Jury II, Big Love).

The Fuse follows Daniel Demoys (Eccleston), a stranger in his own life. Over the years he has gone from being an idealistic young man with a burning desire to make the world a better place, to a disillusioned and corrupt council official. His alcoholism has driven a wedge between him and wife, Alex (Kirwan), and their three children. The fallout from his alcohol fuelled actions prove agonising for all around him.

Hayley Atwell of Captain America First Seen HERE

IMG_3967x

Hayley Atwell is now front page news as the sexy freedom fighter Peggy Carter the love interest in Captain America but here she is enjoying the view of Neon America as she drops into Manchester Photographic during the filming.

Its nearly a year ago that our corner of Manchester’s Northern Quarter was turned into 1940s America. With vintage cars driving past and extras walking out of the pages of the comic book in their wartime regalia.

We have seen the film crews out here quite a few times but nothing has been as epic. Captain America will certainly be the blockbuster of the summer and so here are some photos so you too can play – spot Manchester’s Northern Quarter!

Mike Rampton Revamped

Speed

Mike Rampton’s ‘My View of Manchester’ exhibit was up at Manchester Photographic Gallery for a short while recently but has now found a new home at the Manchester Photographic School and Studio at 6 Tariff Street. Mike’s friends – often made from his considerable work on the streets – come and visit to pay homage to his work. One person Mike bumped into on the streets of Manchester was Charlotte Griffiths then features editor at DSLR. That was 3 years ago and now Charlotte has moved to Advanced Photographer a new print and digital photographic magazine http://www.advancedphotographer.co.uk/ – the paper version hit the streets 20th July 2011 with an 8 page article about Mike who’ll be expecting many more hits on his popular Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/tootdood/.

Mike gives all of his images amusing titles, takes images of the city itself and the people who inhabit it, he certainly has the patience to capture the heart and soul of Manchester. Here are some Manchester scenes for you to enjoy – starting with a break in the clouds…
